Emanouil Petkov, DVM, MS
Neurology
Dr. Emanouil Petkov is a veterinary neurologist and neurosurgeon with 15 years of experience in orthopedics and general surgery prior to entering the world of veterinary neurosurgery. Raised and educated in Eastern Europe he spent his youth working with his father, a veterinary epidemiologist in the areas of veterinary and human infectious disease and epidemiology. Dr Petkov achieved licensing as a veterinary technician, by the age of 19 and graduated in the top 5 of his class from veterinary school. He did complete a rotating internship at his native university and a surgery specialty internship at New York Veterinary Specialists on Long Island after coming to the United States.
Dr. Petkov completed his neurology and neurosurgery residency at Guardian Veterinary Specialists in Brewster NY and is in the process of completing his board certification with the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in the area of neurology and neurosurgery.
His interests span clinical neurology, neurosurgery, neuroscience and musculoskeletal pathophysiology, with emphasis on spinal surgery, brain surgery, biomechanical and biomedical engineering, implant design across veterinary and translational contexts. He has delivered numerous presentations and has published papers on angular limb deformities and developmental orthopedic diseases in small animals in the past. Today, he is applying those foundations to the treatment of canine spinal deformities and their surgical correction.
Besides his daily clinical responsibilities, Dr. Petkov has a deep interest in research and translational medicine. He is currently working with the faculty of the Yale School of Medicine Biomechanical Laboratory and mentors graduate students.
Dr. Petkov devotes his free time to his wife and his kids pursuing camping, skiing, kayaking, fishing and all other outdoor adventures. He is a German Shepherd lover and has a large Shepherd called Siegfried.
